When Playing Was Life

I touch the cold metal to my lips.

Breathe in deep pulling the smell of old metal and mineral oil into my nostrils.

Reliving a memory long gone.

The last time the metal wasn’t quite so old -

the oil not quite so pungent.

Then, a little spilled valve oil was normal -

a constant friend.

Hold the breathe for a moment,

remember the anticipation of that first tone.

But I pull away and exhale.

No longer do my lungs know what it’s like to control the air.

I try again.

Cold lips, deep breathe, counting slowly.

1…and…2…and…

Pressing my lips into the familiar embouchure -

my lips, jaw, and chops remembering the old feeling.

It’s like a bike. Just get on and you’ll remember what to do.

It’s good my muscles still remember.

I’d never be able to start from scratch.

I remember the hours spent holding my breathe preparing – anticipating.

The air stream starts. Slowly.

Bwhap.

The tone skips.

My muscles remember but their strength is gone.

A sheepish grin is on my face for no one but my memories.

I flick the valves remembering and enjoying the quick click I get in response.

Again I try.

Lips to warmed metal, deep breathe, and the air flow settles this time.

Waaaaa, bah, bah-ah-ah. Dah!

A quick series of tones. I can still hit something.

My eyes close and I remember when the world was mine.

My tones moved – fingers danced on the valves and slides flew centering the tones.

My breathe slow and measured – four long measures forcing the tones out.

There they are in my mind – the drums, accompanying me.

The lilt of the woodwinds as they chime in.

Dah! Dah! Dah-ahaha-ahhhhh

I settle the tone again. Breathe deep and leave a tone lingering.

DAHAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaa

Already I’m winded and my face is tired.

I pull away – remembering when playing was Life.
