The Cat and I - The First Post

by @ 8:00 am on February 1, 2008.

I’ve decided to try to write at least a few sentences every day that are fiction or creative in some way. So I decided to start with “The Cat and I”. I plan to post snippets as I work on it and add new lines. Hopefully you’ll see 5 updates per week…on a particularly good week you might even see me do some editing and correction of type-o’s. I may continue the story or I may kill it. We’ll see how things progress and what strikes me as needing to be written for the day.

“The Cat and I” The First Post
I was sitting last night looking into the dark and the cat came and sat by my side. He said “Meow.” and I said “Hello.” and we were content to look on into the night’s lights.
“The Moon is particularly bright tonight don’t you think?”
The cat sat next to me and propped himself (I suppose; I never did think to ask to be certain) and wrapped his tail around his body. You know that smug, I-can-sit-here-and-look-like-I’m-on-a-pedestal look and look good doing it type pose? I guess you do. Everyone knows how cats can be.

I didn’t quite expect that response, but something is better than nothing. I took another sip of my drink and gazed out. It has been a long time since I had seen a night shinning without electricity. I’m sure the cat had no idea that in some places the sun never sets, but he could sit regally and be far wiser than us all.

Perhaps I had made my drink a little too strong this evening to be having a chat about life with a cat, but I don’t see anything wrong with asking someone with nine lives about life. You know Life, the Universe, and Everything? Although I’m not sure this cat was that bright as he had already lived six of his nine lives and I’m fairly certain he was no more than twelve years old or so. And to be honest, I had made it a solid 30 years with just the one. So perhaps having more than one life wasn’t really going to get you anywhere. I’m sure the cat would disagree.
