Rose-Hulman was announced to be the #1 undergraduate engineering college as ranked by News and World Report.
Another article from Inside Indiana Buisness has an article about Rose’s rankings. (Basically it says we ranked number one 5 years in a row. Yay.)
I know I should be happy that my school is a good school to be attending, but I think it pulls too much attention to my school. There were 475(ish) in my class. The incoming freshman class is 512 (I setup all their laptops) and I’m not sure they all came to Rose for a “good” reason.
I choose Rose because I loved the way campus felt, I was promised that my Profs. would know my name (and most do), and I was promised a good education.
My education is great, and my profs. are really helpful and can be easily reached, but the “feeling” of campus is changing.
My freshman year there was a mix of people doing their homework and taking part in extracurricular activities. Last year, I noticed a lack of interest by the freshman to take part in many extracurriculars. Maybe I’m just in the wrong groups, but for the most part it felt as if the freshman were doing their homework and not doing anything to make Rose a better place to live and go to school.
There’s only so much you can learn about yourself by sitting and doing engineering problems all night long. Eventually, you have to come out of your room and interact with people of different mindsets. I’ve learned a great deal about myself by “accidentally” becoming overly involved with the campus newspaper (The Rose Thorn).
Perhaps, I’m just missing the people by my choices in extracurriculars, or maybe I’m nuts, but I don’t like the direction Rose is heading. Maybe I’ll do a little research and see if I need to try and get some more support of more extracurricular groups (of course I’ll need a reprieve from president Hulbert to get me out of some of my class work).

Well, I realized that my cousin was going to some cool tech school in Indiana, but I didn’t realize that Rose-Hulman was in Indiana. So…I was talking with my father and he stated that they would be going to Rose something.
So…be sure to give Flavel Hyman a nice laptop.
Oh..and about the laptops, I hear that they’re a bit outdated but it’s mandatory that you buy the laptop from Rose-Hulman to use at Ros-Hulman…..any details on that. I’m told they’re something like $2,500 each, but that they’re a bit older. I personally would like to set him up with a nice laptop, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do?

I agree with you about extracurriculars. I am a firm believer in geting involved in SOMETHING, whatever it is. Freshman must be aware overly involved CAN happen also. Looking back, I feel the stuff I got involved in (which wasn’t alot) made a difference.
