Below is the answer I gave to this exact question when completing the ‘College of Masonry’ from the GLOCPO.
That we are a fraternal organization of men who all profess to believe in the same thing. That there is a Supreme Being, who by whatever name each chooses to call that Being, guides us, protects us, defends us and ultimately will forever be with us. We in turn, afford these same offerings to each brother and his family the world over. To recognize each other we have secret modes of recognition.
We are brothers.
We recognize each other the world over.
We have strict morals.
We support each other.
We defend each other.
We protect each other.
We care for each other.
We respect each other.
We help each other in everyday life.
We enjoy each others companionship.
We are not a secret society, but a ‘family’ with private information.
We fund and support numerous groups, organizations and research. Particularly for children.
We strive to improve ourselves and help others to do the same.
And all of this is extended to each of our families and done no matter what his station in life is or where in the world he may be at the time.

Borrowed that from The Lodge Room Forum which has lots of cool conversations. Anyway, I’m not sure he exactly answers the question posed, but I think it gets the point of the brotherhood across.
