Ok, just read on the BBC that television commercials for fatty, sugary, or high salt content foods in Britain will wil shown mostly after 9pm and very little/not at all from 6pm to 9pm to keep kids from seeing it.
Is that sad or what? They say it’s supposed to help obese kids not be obese…um, hello? Where are their parents to begin with? I saw all kinds of stuff and wanted all kinds of stuff, but Mom said no…DUH! What else are parents for?
Of course, the moment I went away to school I splurged and ate all kinds of crap Mom and Dad had only allowed us to eat on occasion or with restraint. But I’ve gotten over that (for the most part) and know from experience that I’ve got to have a semi-intelligent diet.
So my remedy for fat kids in Britain is: Fat kid’s parents need to wake up and say no.
Personal responsibility (or parental responsibility) is always a better solution that setting up a regulatory system.

I’ll second your sentiment, particularly as someone whose parents *didn’t* push a decent diet on me–and look at the results: I had to beat it into myself ruthlessly at the age of 19.
One could rah-rah personal responsibility/willpower there, I suppose, but really, I could have spared my body a good amount of trauma had my parents considered these things more important. Le sigh.

Your remedy is the only remedy.
I’ll quote Lazyboy on that:

At least, now I am getting the respect I deserve. Of course, I was a capital B for many years.
Been there, done that — don’t want the next generation to repeat it. That’s why I’m the mom.
